The Fourth Chung-Hwa International Conference on Buddhism was held by the Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies at the Academic Activity Center, Academia Sinica, Taipei, January 18-20, 2002 The conference topic was “The Role of Buddhism in the 21st Century” The conference was further divided into three subtopics: Buddhism in daily life, Buddhism in society, and Buddhism in the information age There were fourteen sessions, thirty-five presenters and twenty-four observers coming from eleven countries or regions in the conference
The present collection contains the English papers presented at this conference The first two papers were the conference keynote addresses, Master Sheng Yen’s “Buddhism in the 21st Century: Its Social Function and View of Practice,” and Professor Lewis Lancaster’s “Buddhist Traditions in the Contemporary World: History and Critiques”
The remaining papers fall under the three subtopics mentioned above Papers under the first subtopic include Rupert Gethin’s “Can Killing a Living Being Ever be an Act of Compassion The Analysis of the Act of Killing in the Abhidhamma and Pali Commentaries,” Pavel Grokhovski’s “Poetics of Mah257;y257;na S363;tras Based on an Analysis of Sam257;dhir257;ja S363;tra,” and Isshin Tejima’s “Study of History and Buddhism: An Examination Based on the Ritual of the Eight Precepts of Purity” These scholars discuss Buddhist practices or concepts in the Indian Buddhist tradition which have important implications with respect to the implementation of Buddhism in daily life or its practice
The second subtopic includes Jeffrey Hopkins’s “Buddhist Goals and their Daily Relevance,” Phra Suthivorayan’s “New Thought in Buddhism,” KTS Sarao’s “Buddhism and Animal Rights,” Katsumi Okimoto’s “Role of Religion Today,” Brian Bocking’s “Buddhist Studies and the Study of Religions,” Wei-yi Cheng’s “Rethinking Western Feminist Critiques on Buddhism,” Dharmachari Lokamitra’s “Buddhism and Society: The Dynamics of Right Livelihood,” Shunzo Onoda’s, “A Pending Task for the New Century: The Pioneering Works of Tai-xu(太虛)and the Han-Tibetan Interchangein Buddhist Studies(漢藏佛學交流)” and Max Deeg’s “Buddhist Studies and its Impact on Buddhism in Western Societies: An Historical Sketch and Prospects” These papers investigate a wide range of topics through which a number of important issues relevant to Buddhism’s role in contemporary society are explored
The third subtopic, Buddhism in the information age, includes Christian Wittern’s “The Text in the Age of Digital Reproduction,” Sam van Schaik’s “Dunhuang Manuscripts Online: The International Dunhuang Project,” Charles Muller’s “Buddhist Discussion Mail Lists: Reflections on Prior Developments and a Proposal for the Creation of a New Kind of Buddhism Discussion List,” Robert R Chilton’s “Tibetan Buddhism at the Digital Frontier,” In-Sub Hur’s “Report on the Characteristics of the Digital Tripitaka Koreana 2002,” and Yu-Fen Shih’s “The Cha7789;7789;ha Sa7749;g257;yana CD—from Baskets to the Internet” These authors discuss one of the most important issues facing Buddhist studies in this century: the wise usage of computer and information-processing technologies in Buddhist studies
It has been the goal of the founder of Dharma Drum Buddhist Association, Master Sheng Yen, to facilitate the sharing of knowledge among domestic and international scholars in Buddhist studies through the Chung-Hwa International Conference on Buddhism By gathering and publishing the research and wise counsel contained in these papers, our institute hopes that this volume of conference proceedings will contribute to the well-being of humanity and the development of Buddhist Studies in the 21st century
