Until very recently, readers of English with an interest in Jam-y - angshay-ba’s tenets had access only to the Consequence chapter of theGreat Exposition of Tenets in Jeffrey Hopkins’ Meditation on Emptiness.
Jeffrey Hopkins has now published a translation of the entireGreat Exposition of Tenets in his very readable Maps of the Profound, which seamlessly merges Jam-y - ang-shay-ba’s text with many of Nga-wa - ng-bel-den’s annotations and word commentaries on the root verses. Those readers with a general interest in Geluk tenets and in Jam-y - ang-shay-ba’s Great Exposition of Tenets in particular are urged to acquire Meditation on Emptiness and Maps of the Profound.
The present volume—Paths to Omniscience—includes thirty of Nga-wa - ng-bel-den’s annotations to the interpretation of scripture section of Jam-y - ang-shay-ba’s Middle Way Consequence chapter. Only a very few of these annotations are cited in Maps of the Profound.
Since I was fortunate enough to work with Jeffrey Hopkins on these translations, I am pleased to suggest that they might serve as a useful accompaniment to the Consequence section of Maps of the Profound.
Professor Hopkins’ help in developing these translations was invaluable. I could never have completed them without access to his amazing reservoir of scholarship. I am profoundly grateful for his vast kindness and generosity. It is my hope that the essays included herein might provide a certain amount of necessary background information related to the complex issues involved in Jam-y - ang-shay-ba’s discussion of interpretation of scripture.
